Sharon Christian, a
War Memorial emergency room physician, traveled to South Korea recently to compete in a Kuk
Sool Won martial arts tournament and tour parts of South Korea. Accompanying Dr. Christian were her
husband, Jeremy Christian, Sa Bum Karl Stolt instructor at the Washington
School Kuk Sool Won classes, and Sa Bum Monty Pinder instructor at the
Family Martial Arts Centre in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.
Dr. Christian, a Jo Kyo Nim or first degree black belt, competed at the
Pusan Coliseum in Pusan,
South Korea. The majority of the competitors were
from South Korea and
the United States;
however, the countries of Spain,
Amsterdam, and the United Kingdom were also
represented. Her competitions
included empty-hand forms, a weapons form, self-defense techniques, and
board breaking.
After the tournament
Dr. Christian and her tour group of 250 fellow martial arts students
and their family members visited the Shilla Palace
and Young-san
University in
Kyung Ju.
The tour group spent a night at the Baekdam_sa
Temple in the mountains and shopped in some of the markets in Seoul.
During the overnight
stay at the Baekdam_sa Temple, Dr. Christian
teamed up with her husband Jeremy, Kimberly Whitcomb from New York, Donald McCondach
from City of Victoria Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and Monty Pinder from Sault
Ste. Marie, Ontario to compete in a Pagoda building contest.
The five-person teams
had twenty minutes to build stone pagodas in a stream bed. The pagodas were judged by monks from
the Baekdam_sa Temple on height, balance, and
creativity. Dr. Christian’s team
tied for second place.
