Kuk Sool Won of Sault, Michigan Attends the 2000 World Kuk Sool Championships in Houston, Texas

SAULT STE. MARIE - Several students and instructors from Kuk Sool Won of Sault Ste. Marie attended the World Kuk Sool Won Championships in Houston, Texas over the weekend of October 14-15. Although no students competed, Kuk Sool of Sault Ste. Marie played a significant role in the Master's Exhibition on Saturday night. Of the hundreds martial artists from around the globe in attendance, only Sault Ste. Marie head instructor Jonathan Simonds, Sault assistant instructor Karl Stolt and friend of Kuk Sool of Sault Ste. Marie Norman Laroque of Quebec, Canada received promotion to higher levels of black belt.

 

       Jonathan Simonds, a martial artist with 32 years of experience, received promotion to fifth-degree black belt (Kwahn Jahng Nim), which in Kuk Sool Won is Master level. To reach this level in Kuk Sool one must have trained for a minimum of 18 years and have tested multiple times in front of Grandmaster Suh. Kwahn Jahng Nim Simonds has been actively involved with martial arts for the majority of is life. Master Simonds began his career in 1968, training in and receiving black belts in several other styles until he found Kuk Sool Won in the 1980's. He takes great pride in teaching Kuk Sool Won in Sault Ste. Marie.

        Karl Stolt, a former public school teacher in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, received promotion to fourth-degree black belt (Sa Bum Nim), assistant master level in Kuk Sool Won. This rank in Kuk Sool requires at least 13 years training in addition to testing personally before Grandmaster Suh. Sa Bum Nim Stolt endured six rigorous tests to earn his promotion, including a particularly grueling test at the West Point military academy. Sa Bum Nim Stolt has 17 years experience in the martial arts. He supervises the teaching of Kuk Sool at Washington School in Sault Ste. Marie and at Lake Superior State University and enjoys interacting with instructors and students.

        Norman Laroque, a longtime friend of Kuk Sool Won of Sault Ste. Marie, also received promotion to fifth degree black belt at the World Kuk Sool Master's Exhibition. Like Master Simonds, Kwahn Jang Nim Laroque has more than three decades of martial arts experience. Master Laroque lives in Quebec, Canada and though lives more than six hours from Sault Ste. Marie frequently attends tournaments here.
